Role of Depression in Head and Neck Cancer

About the Webinar: 

Among the many challenges facing patients with head and neck cancer, depression can be an added stressor that, if unrecognized and untreated, contributes to decreased quality of life and early mortality. Evidence has long shown that depression rates in cancer patients are among the highest in those with head and neck cancers, occurring in approximately 15% to 50% of these patients. Join us to learn more on this topic and how it can be addressed with different modalities and treatments. We will also hear from a local survivor about some of the challenges faced by head & neck cancer patients.

Learning Objectives: 

1) Discuss the impact of depression in head and neck cancer.

2) Describe the role of different treatment modalities in depression for head and neck cancer patients.

3) Review prevention methods for depression in head and neck cancer patients.

About the Speakers

Robert Lindau, MD, FACS is a head and neck oncologist  board certified in general surgery. He completed his residency training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and his fellowship at the Creighton University School of Medicine. He received additional training for his head and neck oncology specialty at the Oregon Health & Science University Hospital.  Dr. Lindau works hand in hand with multidisciplinary teams at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center to deliver outstanding care and treatment to patients. "To me, The Meaning of Care means helping patients navigate through their cancer care and treatment, informing them of everything that needs to happen, getting them through that difficult time and also being with them through the good times." 

Mickey Roscoe was born and raised in Central City, Nebraska. He recently retired from Lincoln Fire and Rescue after 28 years of service as a firefighter and a paramedic. Mickey was diagnosed with stage II cancer of the head and neck on May 13, 2021, at the age of 56. He had surgery on June 15, 2021 to remove the right tonsil and 67 lymph nodes, of which, 8 were cancerous.  He is  an active participant in the local SPOHNC (Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer) chapter in Lincoln. He is an advocate to help educate and bring awareness to the challenges faced by head & neck cancer patients. .
